About this blog

What’s the blog for?

We’re traveling. We’d like to record our journey and we’re happy to share it with you.

Where are you going?

We left New Zealand on 29 December 2013 with the broad intention of traveling for a year.

Our first five months were in South America. We spent three of those in Colombia volunteering at the Yellow Butterfly Foundation – Fundacion Mariposas Amarillas in Santa Marta before heading down through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
Now we’re on our Asian leg which is Hong Kong to Istanbul, mostly overland. At this stage that means China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey.

What’s with the name?

We’ve long planned to follow the old silk road from Asia to the middle east. Various things delayed our departure and put Latin American first. Which isn’t to say the silk road is any less a detour, really. Hence the name.
