Official #teamsloth merchandise

Great news! We’re not the only website to cheer for #teamsloth. Slothville.com is an ‘official’ American support group for sloths. If you sign up, you receive a free certificate and excellent poster of sloths.

I have taken the liberty of signing up a range of my friends and relatives who I expect to be ardent campaigners for #teamsloth. I’m sure they appreciate my initiative.

All aboard the sloth bandwagon

In our time in Colombia I have developed a fascination with sloths. I can’t quite put my finger on why exactly. It might be: their extraordinarily slow movement; their following in Hollywood; or, their heroic bathroom visits. It may also be their endearing Spanish name, oso perezoso which translates directly as lazy bear. In any case, I’m hooked. I think they are excellent creatures. And, of course, in these parts there are opportunities to visit with them.

Fiona did not share my initial enthusiasm. So I did what any reasonable husband would do in the face of such indifference and began a social media crusade to get Fiona on the sloth bandwagon. I enlisted friends who are generally fond of fuzzy things, and they got into gear:

I was almost disappointed at how easy Fiona was to crack. I had visions of #teamsloth trending on twitter. But she’s fully on board now, as are the friends from New Zealand whose travel path we have crossed in Medellin. So, in breaking news, tomorrow we are headed to see some sloths. We found a sanctuary near Medellin and Fiona got in touch with them. In part to manage your expectations, and to demonstrate the sanctuary’s credentials as part of #teamsloth, I want to reproduce some (translated) excerpts from our email exchange:

Them: It is important to note that you will not be able to interact with the sloths or take pictures while touring the sanctuary. This is a rescue and rehabilitation centre… I write this because some people are disappointed. They do not understand the terrifying story of these noble beings.

Us: Of course, we will treat the animals with the dignity that they deserve.

Them: I am glad you understand the reasons I wrote to you.

Looking forward to bringing more of #teamsloth to a blog post near you soon.
